We now have a dedicated area of our website addressing the health inequalities faced by LGBTQI+ people around substance use and health.
Throughout our work we are keen to include the perspectives of LGBTQI+ people to help raise awareness and understanding of specific substance use cultures. We also hope this work will improve both the prevention of, and response to, problem substance use amongst the LGBTQI+ community members in Scotland.
Adrienne Hannah, manager of SDF’s Sexual Health, BBV and Harm Reduction team said:
“At SDF we are committed to working with partners at all levels to address the health inequalities faced by LGBTQI+ people around substance use and health.
“LGBTQI+ people often face challenges that other people don’t necessarily have to contend with. This can impact on the way some LGBTQI+ people use alcohol and drugs. These challenges may include rejection by family and friends as well as harassment, bullying and violence due to their gender identity or sexual orientation.”
